Plant it on Me
With the arrival of spring and the warming of the weather
we thought it only appropriate to feature items that add a modern touch outside
the home as well as indoor. The proper well-placed and landscaped planter can
do wonders in bringing the modern look all together. Planters can provide
visual warmth to a room, soften a corner of the house exterior, or turn your
patio into an oasis of good design and relaxation.
We all have seen those fabulous Julius Shulman photographs of the Case Study
houses from the '50s and '60s brimming with Architectural Pottery pots. Well
guess what. They're back and available in a variety of styles and finishes. And
they're much less pricey than their vintage collectible counterparts so you
won't feel so bad using them.
But if the California modern look is not what you are after there are other
choices as well. In addition to the impressive Architectural Pottery design
Peanut Planter we also picture two quite simple pots with very clean lines. The
white planter on wheels is a 1975 design by Anna Castelli Ferrieri for Kartell,
while the terracotta tone example is from a series by designer Paolo Rizzatto.
The latter two are constructed of durable molded plastic while the first is
made of ceramic.
Where to find (from top left to right):
The Peanut planter shown at left as well as other new production Architectural
Pottery designs can be found at
Daniel Donnelly. The Kartell planter can be ordered in
either black or white at
retromodern.com, while the Rizzatto new-pot series can be
found at
Unica Home.
